The history of Western art is the result of a Judeo-Christian heredity that has for centuries developed a deeply rooted relationship between art and religion. Only fairly recently, with the start of modernism and the arrival of contemporary art, have these two spheres been considered as separate disciplines. The Mystical Self derives its form both from these very considerations and from the wish to reopen a dialogue between contemporary art and religion or, perhaps, "to search for lost intimacy", in the words of Bataille.

Starting from the idea that making art, as I believe, is no longer a question of "meaning" so much as "being", this project aims at inquiring into a transcendental sphere that also involves the artists themselves, because they too are people.

Inner experience is a journey towards the limits of human possibilities that goes beyond the threshold in order to become lost in the
normal">beyond
, in that non-place where communication between human reason and the sacred dimension comes about. However, to think about spirituality does not mean simply dwelling on humanity's personal research into the infinite, but also to consider enormous world-wide social problems. As we know, many international situations are covered up and pigeonholed as problems regarding a belief: in fact they are part of a system of egoisms and claims that have purely political and economic motivations.

Enriched  by international experience, artists must be able to create a universal dialogue capable of looking beyond sterile political maps or various cultural nationalisms. With this in mind a genuine dialogue between religions can come about, one that is able to spark off a process of mutual understanding. In this way our convictions can be fertilized by the intuitions of others, without falling into the trap of winning over others. The outcome is a confrontation based, not on single dogmas, but on the interiority of each individual who has felt obliged to take part in it and who has made the most of the situation in order to put his own sensibility on the line, while at the same time insisting on the need for greater tolerance and understanding.

Through its selection of videos, this project tries to give an answer and to lead to reflections on some "simple" questions: what are we looking for? Is it possible to attempt to express a religious conscience without the trappings of traditional dogmas? Without gods/divinities, churches, or reassuring links to morality? A world not consoled by familiar religious imagery? And how do artists work with such common concepts as faith, meditation, or religious symbolism?

Humanity's inborn self-questioning is obviously not a problem related to some specific cultural background: after all, we are all vainly facing the same questions and answers that our mind manages to conceive, and they differ from each other only slightly.

The artists selected come from ten different countries, from Russia, Nigeria, Japan, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, Italy…, so as to be able to give the widest ranging view of a theme that universally and indistinctively touches us all. Even without it being obvious, spirituality is certainly an integral part of our daily life, something we cannot escape and that, on the contrary, tempts us like a half-open door waiting to be opened wide…
